Why buy an iPod when a Pocket PC is the same price?

June 9, 2004 8:11 PM

A buddy at work that we'll call "Hays" had an interesting question:

An iPod cost about $300. It does music.

A Pocket PC cost about $300. It does music, movies, games, the web, instant messenger, email, and note taking, calendar, and almost anything else a basic PC can do.

Why buy a iPod when the Pocket PC is all that and more?

Obviously the Pocket PC can't store thousands of songs like the iPod, but many Pocket PC models have a memory card slot, or support bluetooth or WiFi. Transferring music is simple because it acts like an external hard drive in Windows. Windows Media Player 9 will also do music syncing.

Unlike the iPod, the playlist on a Pocket PC can be easily modified, songs can be erased, it has the ability to do recording, and voice commands. Plus there's no DRM to worry about when using a Pocket PC.

Hays had another question:

Why don't they put compact flash hard drives in Pocket PC's?

Hmm.... Anybody wanna help us out? I'm guessing most people don't use their Pocket PC's as MP3 players because they aren't marketed as such, so that much space over the 32 to 64 MB they already come with would be overkill.

It seems to Hays that the Pocket PC is the MP3 Player of the future, today. Is it just a lack of good marketing preventing the Pocket PC from becoming a mainstream gadget like the iPod?

I thought everyone used their pocketpc as a walkman? Battery life sucks, but if you make it a habit of usiing your dock at the end of the day you'll never notice it, and it synchs your info.

What I'd like is a USB port on a pocketpc, to make it useful as a portable HD, and as a better viewer/backup storage for digicams.

Yeah, what is the battery life on a pocket PC anyways?

I'm waiting for them to start putting the microdrives in laptops. It's the last moving part in the whole unit.

For the techies out there a pocket PC or Palm would do the job easily.

However it involves alot of mucking around to do it. I guess what people end up paying for is the ease of use and simplicity of a single function device. Granted thats a hell of alot of money for such.

The other plus is the capacity. Its handy to have so much music available to me on one device.

As for battery life, an Ipod will optomistically last 6 to 8 hours constant use. The Mini perhaps more. Not so sure about a pocket PC though.

I like the Ipod. I own one. But then I own a Tungsten as well.

I think the ipod is doing so well because of it's marketing target. It's for a hipper-younger crowd, most of whom are obsessed with music so chosing between 10,000 songs and 50 is a no brainer. Granted, palms are very good for organizing you're life and now they do almost everything, but as a 20-year-old I don't have a need for a pocket pc.

I do, however bring my ipod with me almost everywhere. Apple is now beginning to offer Bluetooth accessories for the ipod and they are coming out with a Bluetooth adapter so you'll be able to do all the wireless data transfer you want.

I have an iPod and a PocketPC and find the iPod a lot better for listening to music. Also the iPod can hold a hell of a lot more music i have about 5,000 songs on mine which could never be done with a Pocket PC unless you buy a ton memory cards. Also, the iPod does have the function of a calender and the ability to view text documents.

Hi, can you use an ipod as a storage device for Pocket PCs (I particularly have a HP iPaq H2215). Thanks!

Is anyone interested in selling or donating (lol) a used ipod?

Nothing beats the original...for those of us trying to figure out how to get our hands on an iPod but are short on the cash, perhaps you can win one each day til Sept 23rd. You can check it at out www.1800flowers.com.

man....POCKET PC hands down. I own an SX-56 PPC GSM cell phone. I get roughly 12 hours of play/phone time. I have an external battery as well as the internal. So my juice is good. It doesnt hold as much music as an ipod....but with the 2 512MB SD cards i have for it.....i can store @250 songs on one and 3-4 movies on the other. Not to mention the programs i have stored on the other 128MB card i have...Games(Apple IIe emulator, dig-dug, pocket uno, pokect NES emulator, etc...), email, web browsing, my call log does back almost a year and a half, tasks, contacts, calender, GPS, translation dictionaries, photo editing, web authoring, pocket putty so i can SSH into my linux machines, calculators, instant messengers, alarm clock, it records voice notes, you can take hand written notes on it, sound editing, i have two music tuners/metronomes, photo albums, a camera, i mean come on.....jesi crisi......it blows the ipod out of the water.....not to mention you can get a prorgam that emulates the ipod....the navigation, menu system, etc...

APPLE TO OFFER VOUCHERS

SAN FRANCISCO -- As many as two million consumers who had battery problems with older versions of the popular IPod digital music player will get $50 US vouchers and extended service warranties under a tentative settlement in a class-action lawsuit.

Just thought I would share, the flower company listed in my post is one I used yesterday and I was just very pleased with, Please note: I am not affiliated with them.

i just got a 60 gig video ipod and i hate the fucking thing.  the batteries last 2 hours playing video.  My pocketpc lasts all day wifi and bluetooth playing music with the light on the screen the whole time.  The ipod will play one movie and then die.

apple you suck balls.  I hope your greedy asses get hacked by some malicious users.

i have a toshiba E335 and a friend with an iPod. same price but mine does more. he damn near sold his new iPod

Because it's a big diference between an iPOD and a PocketPC

Hi, i think that ipod only  gives  you  the   Music  and  sound  but  not  the  pictures. But the pocket pc will gives you both sound and picture. So. it might be the best one. Then i have no idea about inserting a flash card into the pocket pc. Hey have a look at a site which tells you about hair care tips
