C&O Canal Bike Ride

Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Today Danny, Andy, and I went biking up the C&O Canal trail.  I took photos along the way.

About the canal:

The C&O Canal follows the route of the Potomac River for 184.5 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, MD.  The canal operated from 1828-1924 as a transportation route, primarily hauling coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of original structures, including locks, lockhouses, and aqueducts, serve as reminders of the canal's role as a transportation system during the Canal Era.  In addition, the canal's towpath provides a nearly level, continuous trail through the spectacular scenery of the Potomac River Valley.  Every year millions of visitors come to hike or bike the C&O Canal in order to enjoy the natural, cultural, and recreational opportunities available.

We started in Great Falls Park, on the Maryland side. This is Mile Marker 14.

A nice house along the way. They must have a great view of the Potomac River.

That was Daniel Snyder's house...
Logs and tree limbs litter the steep slope behind the limestone and stucco Potomac mansion of Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. In the otherwise unbroken ribbon of forest separating his and other handsome estates from the old C&O Canal, there is suddenly a yawning gap.

My bike. I got this bike as a gift from Bill Gates. Well, not directly. My first year as Microsoft intern (1997) we were permitted to expense certain amount for a rental car or a bike. My roommates and shared the car and we all got bikes. I continued to use my bike through college so it's a bit beat up, but works great.

There was an incredible storm the night before - we think this might have been one of the victims of that storm.

This little guy (is it a frog or a toad?) successfully jumped through the spokes of Andy's quickly moving bike as well as mine without suffering any damage.

I love signs like this one. Who wants to see a sign showing a person walking their bike? This is far more exciting.
